Hiker’s Haven (Laurel Lie Downstairs only) House Guide

Welcome to Laurel Lie, our Montreat Cabin! We are so thrilled you chose to book with us and hope your stay is enjoyable! Our home is your home! This is our mountain home. It’s not a 5-star hotel (better we think!) Our sweet cabin is nestled in the scenic Montreat community, just outside of Black Mountain, and only 20 minutes from Asheville! Laurel Lie provides lots of space to spread out and relax, breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the gorgeous mountain views. Hiking trails and creeks are right outside the backdoor, and you’re just minutes from wonderful shopping, restaurants, and much more! We hope you love this home as much as we do!

Check-in is at 4pm. Check-out is 10am. Be sure to review our ‘Departure Checklist’ prior to checking out.

Address and Parking

Laurel Lie is located at 99 Shenandoah Terrace, Montreat*, NC 28711 *Some GPS will list it as Black Mountain

Shenandoah Terrace deadends into Laurel Lie’s driveway. Laurel Lie shares a driveway with 97 Shenandoah. Signs for both 99 and 97 can be seen at the top of the driveway. In an effort to be good neighbors we ask that you please park no more than 2 cars at the bottom of the driveway; 1 to the right of the house, and no more than 1 in front of the parking bumpers closest to Laurel Lie. Please DO NOT park in front of the 2 bumpers closest to the neighbor. You are welcome to park more cars in the circle at the top of the driveway.

*Please note: we recently revised this from 3 cars to 2 cars because we found 3 interfered with the neighbor. We have not had a chance to revise the hard copy house guide available in the property. So please disregard the note about 3 cars. Please only park 2 cars at the bottom of the driveway.

Home Entrance

To access the entrance to Hiker’s Haven, head down the gravel steps just beyond the parking bumpers. At the bottom of the steps is a patio and the entrance is the first door on your right. The door is equipped with a smart lock which is unlocked with a code. An access code unique to you will be sent by The Traylor Team prior to check-in.

To unlock the door: enter your code and then press the ‘Ultraloq’ button.

To lock the door: simply press the ‘Ultraloq’ button (no need to enter your code).

Please note, after the door has been closed for 5 minutes it will automatically lock.

The smart lock can also be controlled via an app. If you would like to have access to the app, or you’re having issues with the lock, please contact The Traylor Team.

Guest and Security Policies

Only the guests quoted on the stay will be permitted to enter the home. If you wish to have additional guests, who were not previously quoted, there will be an extra guest fee. If you allow any additional guests into the property we will charge a $500 fee per person, and we may terminate your stay immediately. Please contact us for more details. Please note, Laurel Lie is under EXTERIOR video surveillance.

Laurel Lie’s neighbor is a long-term resident. Help us be a good neighbor! Please be mindful and courteous by following all house rules, as well as all local and state laws.

Smoke-Free and Pet-Free Property

This is both a smoke-free and pet-free property. If you smoke on the property we will charge a $500 fee, and your stay may be terminated immediately. If you bring any pets onto the property we will charge a $500 fee per pet, the pet(s) must be removed from the property immediately, and we may even terminate your stay immediately.

Shoes

The owners live European style, therefore, they ask that you remove your shoes when you come in and leave them by the door.

Trash and Bears (oh my!)

PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY TRASH OR LEAVE FOOD OUTSIDE. One of the many wonderful things about Laurel Lie is that it’s surrounded by nature and wildlife that love to rummage in the trash…or even the screened-in porch (true story, a bear once came onto the screened-in porch because of pancake syrup on the rug!) There is a trash can located in the kitchenette area.

The town of Montreat collects trash on Mondays. You are welcome to set trash at the top of the driveway on Monday MORNING (NOT the night before or later in the day on Monday) if you need trash removed. If you set trash out, please bring the can back down.

Regarding bears, it’s unlikely they will bother you. They’re more interested in food and scraps than you. Don’t be fearful, just be careful!

TVs, Books & Games

The TV downstairs is equipped with a Roku. The Roku remote can power the TV and control the volume, but the TV remote is also available. When turning the TV on it should already be set to the correct source input for the Roku.

*Please note: It has been reported that sometimes when turning on the TV the screen is blank but you can hear sound when using the Roku remote. If this happens, unplug the power from the Roku (behind the TV), wait about 10 seconds, then plug the Roku back in. This seems to correct the issue.

This Roku is set to Guest Mode. Guest Mode requires you to choose a ‘Check-Out’ date the first time you use it. You can then download and log into any services/apps with your own login, and remain logged in for the duration of your stay. Roku will automatically log you out on the check-out date you selected.

There are various books and board games located on the bookshelf that you are free to enjo! Just please put them back when you’re done.

Utility Room, Bathroom, and Complementary Starter Kit

Utility Room: The utility room is equipped with a washer and dryer, and Kitchenette for your use.
*Please note: The utility room is also used by the owners for storage.

Kitchenette: In the utility room is a Kitchenette equipped with a sink, mini fridge, microwave, Keurig, as well as dish towels, dish soap, scrubbing sponge, dishes, cups/mugs, and utensils.

Food: You are welcome to any food found in the fridge/freezer (just be sure to examine expiration dates and use your best judgment).

Bathroom: This unit features a full bathroom with shower (no tub). Hand and body towels are available for your use, as well as body soap and shampoo/conditioner.

Complimentary Starter Kit: This unit is equipped with a complimentary ‘starter kit’ to help you kickstart your stay! Included in the kit are toilet paper, paper towels, laundry pods, K-cup coffee pods, and an assortment of sugar packets and powdered coffee creamer. This unit also comes equipped with some hand and dish soap, individually wrapped bars of soap, shampoo/conditioner, and hand and body towels. If you find you need more than what is provided, you will be responsible for supplying it.

Towels for Messes: If you need to clean up messes (spills, etc) or to dry off from playing in the creek, please use the beach towels (by the washing machine) to help us preserve our good towels.

Misc. & Quirky Things About the House

Lights: There are several light switches that have covers over them. Please DO NOT adjust these switches. Leave them in the positions they’re currently in. Many switches are labeled throughout the home (be sure to look close). Some are not labeled but easy to figure out what they control.

Heating and Cooling: The downstairs unit is heated by a floor radiator. The thermostat to control this radiator is located on a wall in the bedroom. There is a window unit in the bedroom which adequately cools the bedroom and living area (if you leave bedroom door open).

*Please note: The thermostat is missing a cover piece for the floor radiator, but is operational.

String Lights: There are string lights on the patio. You are welcome to plug these in and enjoy them! Just be sure to unplug them when you’re done.

Things To Do

Creek and Trails

Walk right out the back of the house and down the trail! You could hike all the way to Mt. Mitchel if you wanted to, but for an easier hike, go left when you hit the main trail/road and right when you get to the bottom of that. There’s a creek down there and lots of trails right from the house!

Hike

Hike the Lookout Mountain Trail. You can go up in about 45 minutes and down in 30. There are lots of other trails and info and trail maps are available in the lobby of the Assembly Inn in Montreat.

The Town of Montreat

Turn right onto Assembly Drive from Shenandoah Terrace. There is a fun import store called Ten Thousand Villages, a book store gift shop, and the Huckleberry Cafe with Starbucks coffee and wonderful ice cream. You are free to go and enjoy the lobby at the Assembly Inn, or take in the buildings in Montreat which were built and designed by the same Architect as the Grove Park Inn. Plus, take a stroll around beautiful Lake Susan.

Black Mountain

Enjoy lots of window shopping and cute shops!

Favorite Saturday morning thing to do is the Farmer’s Market located behind the First Baptist Church. It’s little and so sweet. Buy wildflowers and coffee and listen to the music. You can “do” it in less than an hour.

Restaurants

In addition to the standard chain options, there are lots of wonderful local restaurants to worth visiting! Be aware, many places close early, so avoid going out too late (after 8!). Some favorites are:

Black Mountain Bistro (great food and outdoor seating has amazing view of the mountains!)

Que Sera Sera (dinner or lunch)

Veranda (lunch)

My Father’s Pizza - best if you can go early, before dark and sit outside and look at the mountains. The Skinny Pig is our favorite pizza. Can also do take-out.

Blue Ridge Biscuits - go early, they always have a line! Go Hungry!

Berliner Kindl - Authentic German

Trailhead - Casual vibe, Great Onion Rings, Steak, and tacos.

Breweries

Black Mountain Brewery - There’s a food truck out back and sometimes live music!

Lookout Mountain Brewing Company

Coffee

Dripolator - Excellent coffee.

Cup Of Jomo - Equally excellent coffee

Kid-Friendly Ideas

Montreat

There is a playground very close to the house. Turn right on Assembly Drive towards Montreat and it’s located on the right side!

Black Mountain

Order to-go food from Louise’s and go directly across the street and eat in the courtyard of WNC Collective (110 Black Mountain Ave). You can eat at Louise’s, but WNC has a gravel courtyard (open to anyone) with some kids activities. This is where Cup of Jomo is located, as well as a bar with craft beer.

Get cupcakes from Hey, hey Cupcake or get ice cream from Kilwins.

Cherry Street Kids - fabulous toy store.

Take a Hike has kids clothes and shoes if your kids get their shoes wet on the first day in the river!

Hardware Store also has lots of fun kid stuff.

Additional Shopping

Tyson’s - miles and miles of furniture.

Seven Sisters - fabulous hand crafted things- beautiful place.

Merry Wine Seller - They have tastings. You might call and go on Thursday or Friday late afternoon.

Asheville

Asheville is only 20 minutes away! You’ll find lots of restaurants and shopping in Asheville, as well as concerts and other night life opportunities. Some of our favorite things in Asheville are…

Favorite Breakfast spot - Tupelo Honey - this is the original one.

Next Favorite Restrauant - Black Bird

Biltmore Village and Estate - Hang out around Biltmore Village and/or in the Biltmore Estate - I think if you have reservations to go to tea at the Inn, or to go to the Winery, you won’t need to buy a ticket and can get through the gate.

Grove Park Inn - we like to eat lunch or have drinks on the terrace or by their fire - depending on weather.

Enjoy! Call us if you have any questions or problems!
