Shopping
Downtown Columbia, including the Vista, 5 Points, and Devine Street area, feature lots of window shopping and boutique shops. You’re about a mile from shopping that includes Publix and Starbucks, and 5 minutes from Shoppes at Woodhill which include Target and chain restaurants. And you’re only about 20 minutes away from Harbison where the Columbiana Mall is located, as well as big box stores and chain restaurants.
Entertainment
Performances: The Koger Center, Township Auditorium, Trustus Theater, Town Theater, and Colonial Life Arena are great places to catch a play, musical, or concert. Traditional movie theaters that play the latest blockbusters are 10-20 minutes away, but located downtown is The Nickeloden which shows old classics and indie films.
Museums and Zoo: Columbia is home to the nationally recognized Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, as well as The South Carolina State Museum, Columbia Art Museum, and Edventure Children’s Museum.
Nightlife: If you’re looking for bars or clubs then check out the Vista and 5 Points areas.
Sporting Events: We are just minutes from Segra Park which is the home of the Columbia Fireflies, a minor league baseball team. After some of their home games, they put on a great fireworks display. Columbia is also home to the University of South Carolina, which competes in a variety of college athletics (including football, basketball, baseball, and soccer).
Recreational
Columbia is unique in that 3 rivers run through our downtown. We have many waterfront parks that take advantage of this. These parks feature walking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and educational exhibits. During the warmer months some of these parks have canoes, kayaks, and tubes available to rent.
About 20 minutes away is Lake Murray, a 50k acre man-made lake. Depending on the time of year one can find a range of activities to enjoy on Lake Murray. From a leisurely sunset cruise to extreme water sports, and many things in between, Lake Murray has it all!
Congaree National Park is about 35 minutes away. This 26k acre park is the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the United States. And each year between May and June, for roughly 2 weeks the park hosts synchronous fireflies. Our park is one of only a few places in the world where these fireflies flash in unison while searching for a mate.
About 20 minutes to the northeast is Sesqui State Park, which features lots of wooded hiking trails, a lake for canoeing and fishing, picnic areas, playground, and splash pad (in the summer). And 20 minutes to the west is Harbison State Forest with many hiking and biking trails.

Misc. Things About The Property
Trash: The outside trash and recycle cans for this property are located in the backyard, NOT on the side of the house. The ones found to the side of the house belong to the neighbor. If you throw trash away outside, please be sure to use the cans located in the backyard.
String Lights: There are string lights in the backyard above the fire pit area. You are welcome to turn these on for your enjoyment, but please be sure to turn them off when you are done with them. The remote for these lights is found on top of the microwave. Please be sure to return the remote here when not in use. Also, the lights will only come on when it's dark enough outside, and sometimes guests (usually children) mess with the remote and set the lights to do things like blink and fade in/out. Feel free to use the remote and adjust the lights back to being on (rather than fading or blinking on and off).
Outdoor Firepit: An outdoor firepit area is located in the backyard. You are welcome to use this. Please be responsible and practice good fire safety. This is a BYOF (Bring Your Own Firewood) firepit.
Charcoal Grill: There is a charcoal grill located in the backyard that is available for you to use. You must supply your own charcoal, lighter fluid, etc. Please be responsible and practice good grill and fire safety when using the grill. Please use the grill brush to scrape the grill after use.
Triple Bunk Bed: One of the bedrooms is equipped with a triple bunk bed. Parents/Adults, please be mindful and careful with small children going to the top bunk.

In the spring you can also head downtown to Segra Park, which is the home of the Columbia Fireflies, a minor league baseball team. After some of their home games they put on a great fireworks display.
Recreational
Columbia is unique in that 3 rivers run through our downtown. We have many waterfront parks that take advantage of this. These parks feature walking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and educational exhibits. During the warmer months, some of these parks have canoes, kayaks, and tubes available to rent.

Congaree National Park is about 25 minutes to the south. This 26k acre park is the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the United States. And each year between May and June, for roughly 2 weeks the park hosts synchronous fireflies. Our park is one of only a few places in the world where these fireflies flash in unison while searching for a mate.
And 20 minutes to the northeast is Sesqui State Park, which features lots of wooded hiking trails, a lake for canoeing and fishing, picnic areas, playground, and splash pad (in the summer).

Misc. Things About The Property
Mini-Split: The space is equipped with a mini-split system to help heat and cool the area. There is a remote which controls this system. If you have questions or issues, please let us know.
Fireplace: There is an electric fireplace located downstairs in the main area. There is a panel above the glass part of the fireplace (in the center) that flips down. Turn on the power which is the switch to the right. There are two knobs that you can adjust the brightness of the light or the temperature of the heat. You can use this fireplace to provide additional heat to the space, or have the light on without the heat simply for the ambiance!
Trundle Bed: A trundle bed is located under the daybed on the main floor. You are welcome to utilize the trundle bed. The trundle bed has the ability to be raised to a higher height if needed. To do this, pull the 2 vertical levers to the left which allows you to squeeze the bar beneath. While squeezing the bar, pull the trundle up. Release the bar and the 2 vertical levers snap back into place, locking it. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!
Extra Sleep Pillows: Extra sleep pillows can be found in the ottoman next to the trundle. The owners would prefer you use these instead of the green sham pillows for the day bed/trundle.
Lights:
String lights: There are string lights on the loft area you are welcome to plug in and enjoy during your stay.
Loft overhead light: The light switch that controls the overhead light in the loft space is located on the main floor by the door outside of the bathroom. Yes, this is a slightly weird setup, haha! :)
Bathroom light: The switch to control the bathroom light is in the bathroom by the vanity and mirror.
Queen Bed Mason Jar Lights: These are handmade and they turn off/on with a dial that’s attached to the back of the headboard (same level as the lights).
Patio: There are cushions for the patio that you can take outside to use. If it seems rainy, please bring them back inside!
Kitchen:
To use the burner plate for cooking, please keep it on the tiles to protect the butcher block and placemat.
Please do not cut directly on the butcher block counter. There are 3 cutting boards for your use.
The glass top on the dining table just rests on top of the table. Just be mindful of this.

Check-In / Check-Out
Check-in is at 4pm. Check-out is 10am. Be sure to review our ‘Departure Checklist’ prior to checking out.
Address and Parking
Laurel Lie is located at 99 Shenandoah Terrace, Montreat*, NC 28711 *Some GPS will list it as Black Mountain
Shenandoah Terrace deadends into Laurel Lie’s driveway. Laurel Lie shares a driveway with 97 Shenandoah. Signs for both 99 and 97 can be seen at the top of the driveway. In an effort to be good neighbors we ask that you please park no more than 2 cars at the bottom of the driveway; 1 to the right of the house, and no more than 1 in front of the parking bumpers closest to Laurel Lie. Please DO NOT park in front of the 2 bumpers closest to the neighbor. You are welcome to park more cars in the circle at the top of the driveway.
*Please note: we recently revised this from 3 cars to 2 cars because we found 3 interfered with the neighbor. We have not had a chance to revise the hard copy house guide available in the property. So please disregard the note about 3 cars. Please only park 2 cars at the bottom of the driveway.
Home Entrance
To access the entrance to Hiker’s Haven, head down the gravel steps just beyond the parking bumpers. At the bottom of the steps is a patio and the entrance is the first door on your right. The door is equipped with a smart lock which is unlocked with a code. An access code unique to you will be sent by The Traylor Team prior to check-in.
To unlock the door: enter your code and then press the ‘Ultraloq’ button.
To lock the door: simply press the ‘Ultraloq’ button (no need to enter your code).
Please note, after the door has been closed for 5 minutes it will automatically lock.
The smart lock can also be controlled via an app. If you would like to have access to the app, or you’re having issues with the lock, please contact The Traylor Team.
Guest and Security Policies
Only the guests quoted on the stay will be permitted to enter the home. If you wish to have additional guests, who were not previously quoted, there will be an extra guest fee. If you allow any additional guests into the property we will charge a $500 fee per person, and we may terminate your stay immediately. Please contact us for more details. Please note, Laurel Lie is under EXTERIOR video surveillance.
Laurel Lie’s neighbor is a long-term resident. Help us be a good neighbor! Please be mindful and courteous by following all house rules, as well as all local and state laws.
Smoke-Free and Pet-Free Property
This is both a smoke-free and pet-free property. If you smoke on the property we will charge a $500 fee, and your stay may be terminated immediately. If you bring any pets onto the property we will charge a $500 fee per pet, the pet(s) must be removed from the property immediately, and we may even terminate your stay immediately.
Shoes
The owners live European style, therefore, they ask that you remove your shoes when you come in and leave them by the door.
Trash and Bears (oh my!)
PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY TRASH OR LEAVE FOOD OUTSIDE. One of the many wonderful things about Laurel Lie is that it’s surrounded by nature and wildlife that love to rummage in the trash…or even the screened-in porch (true story, a bear once came onto the screened-in porch because of pancake syrup on the rug!) There is a trash can located in the kitchenette area.
The town of Montreat collects trash on Mondays. You are welcome to set trash at the top of the driveway on Monday MORNING (NOT the night before or later in the day on Monday) if you need trash removed. If you set trash out, please bring the can back down.
Regarding bears, it’s unlikely they will bother you. They’re more interested in food and scraps than you. Don’t be fearful, just be careful!
TVs, Books & Games
The TV downstairs is equipped with a Roku. The Roku remote can power the TV and control the volume, but the TV remote is also available. When turning the TV on it should already be set to the correct source input for the Roku.
*Please note: It has been reported that sometimes when turning on the TV the screen is blank but you can hear sound when using the Roku remote. If this happens, unplug the power from the Roku (behind the TV), wait about 10 seconds, then plug the Roku back in. This seems to correct the issue.
This Roku is set to Guest Mode. Guest Mode requires you to choose a ‘Check-Out’ date the first time you use it. You can then download and log into any services/apps with your own login, and remain logged in for the duration of your stay. Roku will automatically log you out on the check-out date you selected.
There are various books and board games located on the bookshelf that you are free to enjo! Just please put them back when you’re done.
Utility Room, Bathroom, and Complementary Starter Kit
Utility Room: The utility room is equipped with a washer and dryer, and Kitchenette for your use.
*Please note: The utility room is also used by the owners for storage.
Kitchenette: In the utility room is a Kitchenette equipped with a sink, mini fridge, microwave, Keurig, as well as dish towels, dish soap, scrubbing sponge, dishes, cups/mugs, and utensils.
Food: You are welcome to any food found in the fridge/freezer (just be sure to examine expiration dates and use your best judgment).
Bathroom: This unit features a full bathroom with shower (no tub). Hand and body towels are available for your use, as well as body soap and shampoo/conditioner.
Complimentary Starter Kit: This unit is equipped with a complimentary ‘starter kit’ to help you kickstart your stay! Included in the kit are toilet paper, paper towels, laundry pods, K-cup coffee pods, and an assortment of sugar packets and powdered coffee creamer. This unit also comes equipped with some hand and dish soap, individually wrapped bars of soap, shampoo/conditioner, and hand and body towels. If you find you need more than what is provided, you will be responsible for supplying it.
Towels for Messes: If you need to clean up messes (spills, etc) or to dry off from playing in the creek, please use the beach towels (by the washing machine) to help us preserve our good towels.
Misc. & Quirky Things About the House
Lights: There are several light switches that have covers over them. Please DO NOT adjust these switches. Leave them in the positions they’re currently in. Many switches are labeled throughout the home (be sure to look close). Some are not labeled but easy to figure out what they control.
Heating and Cooling: The downstairs unit is heated by a floor radiator. The thermostat to control this radiator is located on a wall in the bedroom. There is a window unit in the bedroom which adequately cools the bedroom and living area (if you leave bedroom door open).
*Please note: The thermostat is missing a cover piece for the floor radiator, but is operational.
String Lights: There are string lights on the patio. You are welcome to plug these in and enjoy them! Just be sure to unplug them when you’re done.
Things To Do
Creek and Trails
Walk right out the back of the house and down the trail! You could hike all the way to Mt. Mitchel if you wanted to, but for an easier hike, go left when you hit the main trail/road and right when you get to the bottom of that. There’s a creek down there and lots of trails right from the house!
Hike
Hike the Lookout Mountain Trail. You can go up in about 45 minutes and down in 30. There are lots of other trails and info and trail maps are available in the lobby of the Assembly Inn in Montreat.
The Town of Montreat
Turn right onto Assembly Drive from Shenandoah Terrace. There is a fun import store called Ten Thousand Villages, a book store gift shop, and the Huckleberry Cafe with Starbucks coffee and wonderful ice cream. You are free to go and enjoy the lobby at the Assembly Inn, or take in the buildings in Montreat which were built and designed by the same Architect as the Grove Park Inn. Plus, take a stroll around beautiful Lake Susan.
Black Mountain
Enjoy lots of window shopping and cute shops!
Favorite Saturday morning thing to do is the Farmer’s Market located behind the First Baptist Church. It’s little and so sweet. Buy wildflowers and coffee and listen to the music. You can “do” it in less than an hour.
Restaurants
In addition to the standard chain options, there are lots of wonderful local restaurants to worth visiting! Be aware, many places close early, so avoid going out too late (after 8!). Some favorites are:
Black Mountain Bistro (great food and outdoor seating has amazing view of the mountains!)
Que Sera Sera (dinner or lunch)
Veranda (lunch)
My Father’s Pizza - best if you can go early, before dark and sit outside and look at the mountains. The Skinny Pig is our favorite pizza. Can also do take-out.
Blue Ridge Biscuits - go early, they always have a line! Go Hungry!
Berliner Kindl - Authentic German
Trailhead - Casual vibe, Great Onion Rings, Steak, and tacos.
Breweries
Black Mountain Brewery - There’s a food truck out back and sometimes live music!
Lookout Mountain Brewing Company
Coffee
Dripolator - Excellent coffee.
Cup Of Jomo - Equally excellent coffee
Kid-Friendly Ideas
Montreat
There is a playground very close to the house. Turn right on Assembly Drive towards Montreat and it’s located on the right side!
Black Mountain
Order to-go food from Louise’s and go directly across the street and eat in the courtyard of WNC Collective (110 Black Mountain Ave). You can eat at Louise’s, but WNC has a gravel courtyard (open to anyone) with some kids activities. This is where Cup of Jomo is located, as well as a bar with craft beer.
Get cupcakes from Hey, hey Cupcake or get ice cream from Kilwins.
Cherry Street Kids - fabulous toy store.
Take a Hike has kids clothes and shoes if your kids get their shoes wet on the first day in the river!
Hardware Store also has lots of fun kid stuff.
Additional Shopping
Tyson’s - miles and miles of furniture.
Seven Sisters - fabulous hand crafted things- beautiful place.
Merry Wine Seller - They have tastings. You might call and go on Thursday or Friday late afternoon.
Asheville
Asheville is only 20 minutes away! You’ll find lots of restaurants and shopping in Asheville, as well as concerts and other night life opportunities. Some of our favorite things in Asheville are…
Favorite Breakfast spot - Tupelo Honey - this is the original one.
Next Favorite Restrauant - Black Bird
Biltmore Village and Estate - Hang out around Biltmore Village and/or in the Biltmore Estate - I think if you have reservations to go to tea at the Inn, or to go to the Winery, you won’t need to buy a ticket and can get through the gate.
Grove Park Inn - we like to eat lunch or have drinks on the terrace or by their fire - depending on weather.
Enjoy! Call us if you have any questions or problems!
Departure Checklist - Laurel Lie (Downstairs)
Please note, if any of the following are not completed, you may be subject to an additional charge up to $50
DO NOT remove sheets from the bed

Hang all wet dish towels in Kitchenette sink

Collect all trash, tie up bag(s) and put in the large trash can in the kitchenette (overflow trash can be taken to workroom opposite the utility room)
Ensure heat and ac unit are off
Turn off TV and all lights, including string lights on patio (please DO NOT adjust any light switches with covers over them)
Make sure all windows and exterior doors are shut and locked

Your code can unlock both of these doors. Please note, there is a keybox attached to the wall to the left of the main door. This is NOT the smart lock. The smart lock is located on the actual door.
To unlock the door: enter your code and then press the ‘Ultraloq’ button.
To lock the door: simply press the ‘Ultraloq’ button (no need to enter your code).
Please note, after the door has been closed for 5 minutes it will automatically lock.

Good Neighbors
Laurel Lie’s neighbor is a long-term resident. Help us be a good neighbor! Please be mindful and courteous by following all house rules, as well as all local and state laws and by observing quiet hours from 10pm - 7am.
Shoes
The owners live European style, therefore, they ask that you remove your shoes when you come in and leave them by the door.
Trash and Bears (oh my!)
PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY TRASH OR LEAVE FOOD OUTSIDE. One of the many wonderful things about Laurel Lie is that it’s surrounded by nature and all sorts of wildlife that love to rummage in the trash…or even the screened-in porch (true story, a bear once came onto the screened-in porch because of pancake syrup on the rug!) Please be careful with food on the screened in porch and clean up after yourselves well! Please do NOT set trash outside. There is a large blue trash can in the kitchen closet for your bagged overflow trash, as well as, another large trash can with lid in the laundry room downstairs for OVERFLOW trash. DO NOT put trash outside or in owner’s storage under the screened in porch. Bears WILL try to get to it!
The town of Montreat collects trash on Mondays. Please set trash at the top of the driveway on Monday MORNING (NOT the night before or later in the day on Monday). If you set it out, please bring the can back in after it has been emptied.
Regarding bears, it’s unlikely they will bother you. They’re more interested in food and scraps than you. Don’t be fearful, just be careful!
TVs, Printer, Books & Games
Main Floor TV: The TV on the main floor is a smart TV and it is logged into the owner’s Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts (please DO NOT log out of either of these). Feel free to use your own login for any other services/apps, just remember to log yourself out before you leave!
Downstairs TV: The TV downstairs is equipped with a Roku.
There is a printer located in the closet of the main-floor bedroom that you are welcome to use (within reason, copy paper not included). Airprint to Canon TS5 series.
There are various books and board games located downstairs, and there are card games located in the buffet by the kitchen table. Feel free to enjoy these! Just please put them back when you’re done.
Misc. & Quirky Things About the House
Complimentary Starter Kit: This property is equipped with a complimentary ‘starter kit’ to help you kickstart your stay! Included in the kit are toilet paper, paper towels, laundry pods, K-cup coffee pods (located in the far left drawer under the coffee pots), and an assortment of sugar packets and powdered coffee creamer. This property also comes equipped with some hand and dish soap, individually wrapped bars of soap, shampoo/conditioner, and hand and body towels. If you find you need more than what is provided, you will be responsible for supplying it.
Towels for Messes: If you need to clean up messes to help us preserve our good towels we have a basket of towels in the kitchen pantry. Please use these to clean up spills, etc. Beach towels are also available in the laundry room by the washing machine that you are welcome to use after playing in the creek. Please help us preserve our white bath towels by keeping them for bathing only.
Downstairs Kitchenette: There is a Kitchenette located downstairs in the utility room. The Kitchenette is equipped with a sink, mini fridge, microwave, Keurig, as well as dish towels, dish soap, scrubbing sponge, dishes, cups/mugs, and utensils. You are welcome to use these things, but please do not remove any of these items from the Kitchenette.
Food: You are welcome to any food found in the fridge/freezer, pantry, spices/seasonings in cabinets, etc. Be sure to examine expiration dates, and use your best judgment.
Lights and Outlets: There are several light switches with covers over them. Please DO NOT adjust these switches. Leave them in the positions they’re currently in. Many switches are labeled throughout the home (be sure to look close). Some are not labeled but easy to figure out what they control. There are a few outlets on the screened porch that do not currently work.
HVAC: The main and 2nd floor of Laurel Lie is equipped with a brand new HVAC system (summer 2022)! Thermostats are located in both hallways. Do NOT set one thermostat to AC and the other to Heat (or vice versa). The bottom floor has a floor radiator for heat and a window unit in the bedroom for AC. If you leave the door open from the bedroom this unit will sufficiently cool the living area as well. Feel free to open windows and porch doors to enjoy the fresh mountain air. There is also an attic fan upstairs you can run (just be sure to open windows and doors to allow for air flow). If you leave doors and windows open please turn off the HVAC or adjust the temperatures accordingly so that the HVAC does not run while windows are open. And be sure to shut windows/doors when no longer desired open, or not at the property.
Toilets: Please don’t put anything but toilet paper in the toilets. Put feminine products in the trash cans. The toilet on the main floor has a cantankerous handle. It will flush, but you must hold the handle down and wait. Upstairs the toilets do better if you hold the handles downs as wel while flushingl. And try not to use too much toilet paper as it will clog.
Screened-in porch: The screen porch has some leaks when the gutters get full. If you observe leaks, move any furniture that might be getting leaked on and let us know. There are also some screens we are in the process of replacing. You can bring the cushions in if it rains to keep them from getting wet.
Upstairs Deck Furniture: Speaking of leaks and furniture, you should find in one of the upstairs bedrooms an outdoor rug and cushions for the 2 rocking chairs on the upstairs deck. If you plan to sit on this deck feel free to set out the rug and cushions. If you know it’s going to rain we ask if you would please bring the cushions back inside to help preserve them.
String Lights: There are string lights on the screen porch and the downstairs patio. You are welcome to turn these on. Just be sure to turn them off when you’re done. They plug in with extension cords or outlets.
Dishwasher: The dishwasher power is connected to a light switch. The switch has a cover over it and should be in the on position. However, if the dishwasher does not seem to be working / have power to it, check this switch first. We are hoping to upgrade the dishwasher this next year. It works best if you prewash the dishes and use it more to sanitize than remove food.
Coffee: There are two coffee pots for your use. A Keurig and a Drip Coffee pot. In the drawer under the coffee pots, you will find some Kcups, stevia, sugar (or in the pantry or container near the coffee pots), coffee filters, etc
Stove: The stove is older. Sometimes the eyes need to be adjusted. Let us know if this happens, so we can get Rickey to come check it.
